چکیده

Analyzing spatiotemporal characteristics of land-cover (LC) change is important for assessing environmental consequences of urban growth and supporting land management and planning. Less attention, however, has been given to the comparison between land-cover change patterns in developing and developed countries. In this study, Xuzhou city and Dortmund city region were selected as study areas. Multitemporal Landsat images were classified by using the integration method of maximum likelihood classifier, subpixel classifier, and multiple normalized difference vegetation index values based on Vegetation-Impervious Surface-Soil model. Urban growth patterns and processes of the two study areas were investigated and compared through land-cover change detection, buffer analysis, and jaggedness degree. The results indicated that the urban area in Xuzhou city increased more than threefold dramatically from 128.5 to 418.3 km, and the increased sprawling development trend was observed during the study period, while Dortmund city region showed a slight increase from 498 to 715.5 km in urban areas with an increasingly compact development trend. The results revealed a notable difference of spatiotemporal land-cover pattern dynamics between the two study areas as well as confirmed the effectiveness of the combined method of remote sensing and spatial analysis that can be used to support land management and policy decisions. © 2013 Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) [DOI: 10.1117/1.JRS.7.073458]

Land Use and Land Cover Change Detection and Urban Sprawl Analysis of Vijayawada City Using Multitemporal Landsat Data

ABSTRACT Land use and land cover change has become a central component in current strategies for managing natural resources and monitoring environmental changes. Urban expansion has brought serious losses of agriculture land, vegetation land and water bodies. Urban sprawl is responsible for a variety of urban environmental issues like decreased air quality, increased runoff and subsequent flood...

A Survey of Landscape Metrics and Land-use/land-cover Structures on Urban Heat Islands Surface: A Case Study on Urmia City, Iran

Urbanization is developing unprecedentedly on a global scale. One of the chief repercussions of urbanization, caused by man-made alterations in land-use/land-cover (LULC), is the formation of urban heat islands. Albeit, differences among landscape structures and its accompanied effects on the environment are mostly neglected. Accordingly, the main objective of this study is to survey the variou...

Detecting Urban Land-Use and Land-Cover Changes in Mississauga Using Landsat TM Images

The City of Mississauga in Ontario has been experiencing a fast urban growth in the past two decades which has caused rapid loss of the valuable farm and open space land. Land-use and land-cover maps of the City were produced from Landsat TM images for 1985 and 1999, spanning a period of 14 years. Dramatic changes in land use and land cover have occurred, with loss of forest, cropland and water...
